Let us know what you see!

Winteringham is full of wildlife of all kinds - mammals, birds, and insects. But how much is there? Which birds frequent Winteringham and when?  We would love you to tell us, and this page is set aside for anyone from the village to send us any observations of nature and the natural world that they choose.

To send us any observation (it can be as long or as short as you wish) please click here.

We have recently re-developed the Nature site, for the wonderful reason of having TOO much for just this one page!  (Many thanks to Harry Wells in particular for his wonderful photographs).

One foot on the back step!

We’re looking for some pictures of birds and wild animals taken in Winteringham’s gardens, and we’d like you to help!

All you have to do is take a shot of a wild animal in your garden. It can be common, or rare, a visitor or resident, bird, hedgehog, bat. Just as long as it is wild and in Winteringham that’s all we’re looking for!

To send us your “Back-Step” pictures, please click here

Encourage birds to your Winteringham Garden!

Birds benefit from feeding right through the year, not just in the depths of winter. The more people who proffer some food to birds in our delightful part of North Lincolnshire, the more birds we’ll see in the village.

We’ve twisted the arm of Harry Wells who has created many feeding and nest boxes, and he has generously agreed to make these for a cost of just £2 to cover the cost of his supplies. That’s terrific value! Harry will also offer advice on the best positioning, orientation and fixing. He’ll even supply a special base so that swallows can make their nest on modern houses.

Harry tells us that there is still a possibility that boxes erected this year could be used by nesting birds this spring and summer, though they like to have a chance to get used to the boxes before using them.  In any case, the sooner the boxes are in position, the earlier birds can explore their possibilities and the more likely they are to make use of their new home next year.

Harry also tells us that the house martin nesting bracket is only necessary where plastic guttering and fascia boards are being used on a house.

The flying skills of our feathered friends are wonderful to behold at close quarters!

Nature Diary

We welcome occasional (or regular) observations of nature in Winteringham, to appear here. All observations help build up a picture of the wildlife within the parish.  Please feel free to email any observations to us by clicking here.
