Back Home!

On Sunday 5th August 2007, Winteringham First World War Hero Elias William Field went ‘home’ to the Ferry Boat.  Elias had left the Ferry Boat, where he had been the Innkeeper, to do his patriotic duty, with the Lincolnshire Yeomanry in far off Egypt, but on the way, a German submarine attacked the troopship, and Elias died in Algeria of his wounds, and he is now buried in that country.

However, Elias had had his photograph taken at the back of Winteringham’s Ferry Boat Inn, and the photo had been a treasured family possession ever since. Now though, the photo has been reproduced and framed by Winteringham Camera Club, and on Sunday Winifred Snowdon (85) one of two surviving grandchildren of Elias, proudly handed it over to the current landlord of the Ferry Boat, where it will be displayed for all to see.
Winifred was born and bred in Winteringham, later moving up to the North East of England
when she married, although she now lives in the Scunthorpe Area.
She is seen here presenting a photograph of her grandfather to the present Landlord
of the Ferry Boat. She also presented a framed citation of Mr Field
and his death during the First World War.
