Winteringham’s Lorraine Carey has a mountain to climb...... Or rather three!!!!!!
And if that wasn’t difficult enough, she’s doing it in 24 hours ... and they’re in three different countries!
Come the 21st July, and Lorraine will be heading off to Scotland to race up the United Kingdom’s highest peak - Ben Nevis, and as soon as she’s got to the bottom of that mighty mountain, she’ll be hitting the road in a minibus to England’s highest point - Sca Fell in Cumbria, which will be an overnight climb. Then it’s down to the bottom again, into the minibus for a dash to North Wales where the Principality’s highest, and most famous mountain awaits them - Snowdon.
It’s all in the name of charity, for Lorraine will be aiming to raise £500 for Carol’s Smile - a charity which raises funds for Hodgkins Disease, a form of cancer. The title comes from Carol Harbord who died of the disease in 2002. Now one of Lorraine’s work colleague’s at REED Employment in Scunthorpe is suffering from the disease in his early twenties.
Lorraine will be getting in training for the event out and about round Winteringham, walking and running to build up her stamina for this strength-sapping event.
“I’ll be off up to the Dales a few times between now and July,” Lorraine told us. “I need to get my legs used to going up and coming down steep slopes, and there aren’t too many of those around here!”
Lorraine will also have to get used to having no sleep for the entire 24 hours of the event, unless she can snatch forty winks as the bus races to the next mountain, so the whole thing will be very physically draining.
If you would like to aid Lorraine help this wonderful charity, you can donate online at http://www.justgiving.com/lorrainecarey and if you are a UK taxpayer your donation will be worth even more as Justgiving can reclaim an extra 28% from the Chancellor! Alternatively, you can make a donation by cheque direct to Lorraine.
But you can also give lots of encouragement for free as you catch sight of Lorraine in training round the village!
