German coin a reminder of Winteringham’s war role

German Coin from Winteringham Camp
“The Camp” on Winterton Road had several roles during and after the Second World War, one being as a Prisoner of War camp for German POWs.  And when Scunthorpe Metal Detecting Club had a ‘meet’ on land close by the site of the camp, Jean Jacobs found this German coin. It is about the size of an old ‘florin’ or two-shilling piece, and is shown above. The church on the reverse side is the “Garrison Military Church” in Potsdam.  Around the edge is inscribed the words: “GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ”.

Winteringham Find goes to Imperial War Museum!

A recent ‘find’ in Winteringham has been sent to the Imperial War Museum for identification.
The metal strip has rivets at each end.  On one side is engraved “VOL. SER. COy No 13 LINCOLNS” whilst the other states “NEAL PRIESTGATE BARTON”
When Ken called in the experts from North Lincs Museum, they wished to have further research done by military experts at the Imperial War Museum.  The strip is a fascinating historical artefact, and perhaps will yield more local history when more information is discovered!
